Immediately after the assassin fired deadly ammunition while Prime Minister Abe was giving a campaign speech, the video shows more than a foot with two metal barrels and a wooden board with some sort of firing mechanism. Showed a nasty gun. After a big bang, when the shooter fired the barrel, a blow of smoke rose from the gun. "We are doing forensic medicine, but it clearly looks like homemade," a police chief in Nara City, West Japan, where the assassination took place, said at a press conference. The gun is far more brutal than the guns considered homemade in the United States, such as 3D printed firearms and lower receivers assembled in a metal workshop.
The gun, believed to have been used in Abe's attack, had a metal barrel wrapped in black duct tape. A crude oil weapon similar to the
was discovered in the Yamagami family's assault, and so far there is no evidence that its parts have been licensed under strict Japanese regulations.
Japan has some of the strictest gun controls in the world. In 2021, 10 shootings in the country killed only one person and injured four. Most of the shootings were related to Japan's infamous organized crime syndicate, according to the national police. It is very difficult to get a
weapon in Japan.
Improvised firearms are not a new phenomenon, parts are easily available and can be assembled with some DIY skills, says Steve Gordon, a retired Los Angeles Police Department special weapons and tactics officer. Improvised firearms have appeared in prisons around the world, and during World War II, resistance members in the Philippines made barrel guns like shotguns.
"Almost anything can be made in a metal workshop," Gordon explained. "These are just metal and alloy parts." Thanks to
3D printing, online instructions, and manufacturers selling parts that have already been manufactured, the once difficult weapon manufacturing process has become much easier. ..
"Based on all the smoke ... looks like homemade or really bad ammunition," Gordon said about the gun after watching a video of the attack on Abe. Some firearms experts speculated on Friday that the wiring of the suspicious weapon meant that it might have been intended to be fired electrically.
Such weapons are rarely found in the United States due to the widespread availability of off-the-shelf firearms. Over the years, several US prison prisoners have built primitive zippers as weapons. Angola Prison, Louisiana is exhibiting improvised firearms as a warning of threats. Crime nationwide includes 4,444 firearms made from 3D-printed parts and so-called ghost guns that are assembled at home and cannot be tracked.
Los Angeles police said in a report released last year that since January, detectives have linked ghost guns to 24 murders, eight attempted murders, dozens of assaults, and armed robbery. In the first half of 2021, the ministry seized 863 ghost weapons, an increase of almost 300% from 217 seized at the same time in 2020, according to the report.
But it's not just Los Angeles. In 2020, California accounted for 65% of all ghost guns seized by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, according to prosecutors.
Governor of California Gavin Newsom last week signed a new state law permitting law enforcement agencies to curb gun violence and orders related to domestic violence and seize such guns. Newsom had previously signed a law requiring that the sale of firearm precursors be processed through an authorized vendor, which will not come into force until 2024.
